If you are planning to study abroad it is important to make sure that you are prepared so that on your arrival you know what to expect and you can enjoy both studying and living in a foreign country. For most Indian students coming to study in Australia, Europe or the U.S., this can be a little daunting. There are several basic things you are supposed to know to make your stay pleasant.
1. Patience and time
The entire process can take quite a while so it's best to begin proceedings at least six months before your program begins. Any less than that, and you simply won't have enough time.
2. Good grades
The higher your academic scores, the better your chances of getting into a good university.
Recommendations
Also commonly required are recommendation letters from your previous educational institution. This is often made up of 2 or 3 letters from your teachers, which will have to be emailed to your chosen university.
3. Examinations
You may have a great command of English, but you will still have to sit for English testing exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. Give yourself at least two months to prepare for these exams. How much you'll have to score depends upon your chosen program. You can either talk to your counsellor or visit the university website to know more about the entry requirements.
4. visa process
This is the most crucial step since having an offer of admission does not guarantee a visa to travel to study in the country of your choice. You should also understand that a visa refusal from one country can have an adverse effect on subsequent applications to other countries and, hence, this step should be taken carefully. This is where the knowledge of an expert counsellor comes into effect, so as to increase your chances of success.
5. Scholarship and Financial proof
When you're applying to study abroad, you will be asked to confirm that you have the finances to cover your study and living expenses. This could be in the form of a bank statement, a bank loan, etc.
Many universities also offer scholarships to international students.
